The Dodo was a flightless bird closely related to living pigeons and was endemic to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Its extinction in the mid to late seventeenth century was an entirely man-made disaster. Rats and cats introduced to the island by sailors decimated the eggs and chicks and were the main cause of its extinction - the Dodo was said not to be good eating according to sailors' accounts.
This is one of very few surviving complete skeletons of a Dodo.
