Holmesina was a large pampathere, an extinct armadillo-like creature that was distantly related to modern armadillos. Like armadillos, and unlike glyptodonts, the shell of Holmesina was made up of overlapping plates which provided increased flexibility. Holmesina has a substantial dentition, unlike armadillos, so they are suspected to have been herbivores that grazed on coarse vegetation whereas armadillos are mostly insectivorous or omnivorous.
