Pteranodon longiceps & sternbergi
Pteranodon longiceps & sternbergi
Our pteranodon life models are based on the most complete specimen of Pteranodon ever found. Sculpted directly over key skeletal elements, our life restoration represents an accurate interpretation of what the female Pteranodon may have looked like in life, with an approximately 11 foot (3.35 meter) wingspan. Our male model is based on the same skeleton and measurements, so would represent a maturing sub-adult.
TPI offers both male and female models of Pteranodon longiceps based on the most complete Pteranodon ever found. CT scans of this incredible specimen were used to prototype the male which has been scaled to match the largest known Pteranodon with a 24-foot wingspan. Not only are male specimens known for their larger size, but also for their distinctive large head crests.
TPI is serious about bringing the latest research to museum goers in the form of specimens mounted to model these new ideas. We can configure our replicas an infinite number of ways to interpret the latest discoveries for your visitors, like the unique take-off pose proposed by Dr. Mark Witton pictured above
The notably prominent, more vertically oriented crest of males of this species would have assisted in balancing their enormous skulls as well as steering their airplane-sized bodies through the air. Pteranodon sternbergi appears slightly earlier in the fossil record than Pteranodon longiceps though both filled important niches in the ecology of the Western Interior Seaway.
