Originally discovered by O.C. Marsh and crew during the early 1870s, Hesperornis regalis is the first toothed diving bird found in the Niobrara Chalk of Kansas. This large bird lacks wings, but has powerful legs which it used to propel itself through the Western Interior Seaway feeding on the multitudes of small fish that swam there.
